PPS Nutrition Services Director Honored
Congratulations! Gitta Grether-Sweeney, Director of Nutrition Services at Portland Public Schools was honored for being a Women of Influence in the Portland Business Journal, April 25, 2014 issue, with an Orchid Award - Non-Profit Division.

Portland Public Schools Nutrition Service Department is a leader in the nation for providing delicious, nutrient-rich meals to the students with very limited funds. Portland Public Schools was one of the first districts to initiate Farm to School and Harvest of the Month Programs.

Currently Portland Public Schools purchases 32% of the foods served from local vendors and farmers. Menus were improved by preparing food in school kitchens and by eliminating a la carte sales.

Portland Public Schools eliminated many popular foods from their menu such as corn dogs, French fries, and ranch dressing. These foods were replaced with kid-friendly menu items like hand-prepared burritos, whole grain pizza, chicken curry over brown rice, and whole breast chicken nuggets. Another popular addition to the menu was oven roasted vegetables.

Joyce Dougherty, Director of Child Nutrition Programs stated, “The first word that comes to my mind when I think of Gitta Grether-Sweeney is quality! As Director of Nutrition Services for Portland Public Schools, Gitta works closely with a variety of partners, which includes the Oregon Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs; food processors; and manufacturers to provide the best quality food and service for their child nutrition program. Gitta helps students and staff feel important and appreciated. I trust her judgment, I respect her expertise, and I value her as a strong advocate for health, nutrition and wellness.”

The Oregon Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs is very proud of Ms. Grether-Sweeney’s accomplishments and for the great job nutrition services performs on a daily basis to provide delicious, nutrient-rich meals to the students in Portland Public Schools.
