Writing Comparison Study Recruitment

ODE is seeking classrooms of students who are participating in the Smarter Balanced field test at grades 4 and 7 to also complete a writing assessment identical to the OAKS writing assessment previously given at those grades. The purpose of this study is to compare results from the Smarter Balanced assessments with what has been the traditional writing assessment done in Oregon.

Participating schools will also be asked to have students take the online Reading part of the OAKS assessment at grades 4 and 7 so additional comparisons can be made to the Reading portion of the Smarter Balanced assessments, as well as provide further comparisons to the overall ELA score. The writing portion of OAKS will be a paper-administered assessment.

Schools selected to participate will receive a $2.00 per student gratuity. The window for taking the OAKS writing assessment will be between February 19 and March 12. Students may take the OAKS Reading test at any time during the regular OAKS window (through May 22). Participants will receive class roster reports detailing student performance on the OAKS writing test by mid-April. This assessment can count as the required work sample in the area of writing for the 2013-2014 school year.

If you are interested in participating or would like additional information, contact Ken Hermens at ken.hermens@state.or.us eMail.
