The study of the Arts is part of the American vision of what all students should know and be able to do. Oregon's public school system provides instruction in the Arts. The Oregon Board of Education sets rigorous academic content standards. School districts and public charter schools offer students instruction in the Arts that meets the academic content standards (ORS 329). The Oregon Arts Content Standards are presently being reviewed and revised.

In Oregon, Arts Content Standards include recognizing aesthetic elements in works of art; relating and comparing works of art to their social, historical, and cultural contexts; and explaining the influence of the arts on individuals, communities, and cultures. The student must also create, present and perform his/her own work of art. Strands of the arts include music, the visual arts, theatre, and dance.
