NEW CENTURY SCHOOLS: EXAMPLES FROM CHANGING HIGH SCHOOLS

Oregon's New Century Schools and others are designing and implementing creative opportunities for student learning to assure that each student is prepared for successful transitions to his or her next steps. By design an integrated learning system for students that emphasizes personalized learning, high academic expectations for all, relevant academic learning, post high school planning-"next steps", learning beyond the classroom and immersion in the adult world, schools can create learning experiences for each student to:
  • Pursue his/her personal, academic and evolving career interests and post high school goals.
  • Be actively engaged in his/her own educational planning and takes responsibility for his/her own learning.
  • Apply high-level academic and career-related knowledge and skills in relevant and meaningful learning experiences.
  • Have support from school, parents and the community.
The New Century Schools have challenged themselves to create a learning environment for each student that begins to illustrate this integrated system. The diversity of size and geographic location among the New Century School sites will offer a variety of models and implementation strategies for study by Oregon high schools.
