Severe Need Breakfast Reimbursement

Schools may be eligible for extra reimbursement for breakfasts served to eligible children based on USDA criteria for "Severe Need." The extra reimbursement for severe need breakfast applies to individual schools in a district, based on the following two criteria:

  1. The number of lunches served to students with free or reduced-price benefits during the second previous school year was 40% or greater; and
  2. The cost of serving breakfast exceeded the federal reimbursement received

For the 2002/03 school year, use lunch participation data from the 2000/01 school year to calculate the percent free and reduced price student lunch participation in each school. Any school where 40% or more of the student lunches were served to free and reduced price students during the 2000/01 school year can be listed to receive severe need breakfast reimbursement on CNP2000. The total number of breakfasts served during the current year at severe need schools should be claimed in the Severe Need Breakfast column on your monthly Claim for Reimbursement form.

Severe need breakfast cost verification data is calculated from worksheets sent to Sponsors in May of each school year.
