School Food Safety Requirements:
Person in Charge (PIC) Requirements

Two business practice changes in the 2003/2004 school year for sponsors of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs are:

1. Direct certification process, and
2. Use of confidential meal benefit information

On July 1, 2003, the Person in Charge (PIC) requirements of The School Food Safety Requirements  comes into effect and completes the implementation of this food safety rule.

The PIC requirements are found in Chapter 2 and Chapter 8 section 5 of The School Food Safety Requirements. Replacement pages of Chapter 8 section 5 requirements  are enclosed. Please remove the current pages in The School Food Safety Requirements and replace with these revised pages.

The PIC applies to public schools, private schools, and residential child care institutions sponsoring the National School Lunch and/or School Breakfast Programs and competitive food sales vendors in such organizations.

The responsibilities of the PIC may be divided among different employees as appropriate for job classification. If such a division of responsibility occurs, each person must know who is responsible for what part of the requirements.
