Education Programs, Secondary Transition, and Assessment

Education Programs & Assessment

The Education Programs and Assessment section in the Student Services Unit manages several of the state-supported systems that provide direct services to Oregon's programs, districts, and schools. The overall goal of this unit is to build capacity and improve systems and outcomes for diverse learners.

  • Safe and Healthy School Climate
The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act was created to encourage strategies that prevent violence in and around schools, strengthen programs that prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs, and increase parent involvement.
  • Oregon's Alternate (Extended) Assessment
Oregon's Extended Assessments are alternate assessments that are linked to grade level content standards. The Extended assessments measure the performance of students with significant cognitive disabilities against alternate performance standards.
  • Secondary Transition for Students with Disabilities
The IDEA of 2004 requires the consideration of transition needs for students beginning not later than the first IEP to be in effect when the student is 16, and updated annually thereafter.
  • Youth Corrections/Juvenile Detention Education Programs
The Oregon Department of Education is responsible for providing educational services to youths in the Oregon Youth Authority Correctional and County Juvenile Detention Facilities, within Oregon.
  • Long Term Care and Treatment Education Programs
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) contracts with local educational agencies to provide education programs for students who have been placed by other state agencies in day and residential treatment facilities.
  • Hospital Education Programs
The primary purpose of the Hospital Education Program is to provide instruction to students while they are hospitalized for either short term or long term care.
