Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

PBIS: Definition

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is intended to design systemic behavior support systems which will allow students to focus on instruction and be successful in school. "...[PBIS] can be described as a data-driven, team-based framework or approach for establishing a continuum of effective behavioral practices and systems that (a) prevents the development or worsening of problem behavior and (b) encourages the teaching and reinforcement of prosocial expectations and behavior across all environments for all students by all staff (Sugai, Simonsen, & Horner, 2008)." When districts and schools use PBIS techniques and strategies, they develop skills and knowledge to build systemic, accurate, and sustainable behavior support for all students.

In 2005-2006, ODE awarded Linn-Benton-Lincoln (LBL) ESD a contract to lead this effort by providing training and technical assistance to participating districts. In 2009-2010, ODE awarded Clackamas ESD a contract to move the state into the second tier of PBIS interventions. 2009-2010 Executive Summary PDF 2009-2010 Executive Summary of Activities of Oregon's PBIS Initiative.

Currently ODE has partnered with the NorthWest PBIS Network to provide additional technical assistance to current EBISS districts with tier 2 & 3 interventions. This work is supported by Oregon's State Personnel Development Grant.
