Oregon school districts face a critical shortage of Speech Language Pathologists. In order to meet the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) and Individual Education Program (IEP) requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), qualified professionals are needed to provide services to identified students.
To address this critical shortage, House Bill 3141, Section 19 (12), was passed by the 74th Oregon Legislative Assembly: Each biennium, the Department of Education may expend up to $150,000 from the State School Fund for the administration of a program to increase the number of speech-language pathologists and speech-language pathology assistants under sections 21 to 25 of this 2007 Act. The Oregon Department of Education provides scholarships and mentoring funds to employees of Oregon school districts/ESDs in order to increase the number of speech language pathologists (SLP) and speech language pathology assistants (SLPA) that are working in Oregon schools. Districts/ESDs from across the state are involved with the SLP and SLPA cohort scholarship programs. |
