CCSS Toolkit: Administrators - Examine Classroom Instruction


CCSS Toolkit
The research is clear - teachers matter most when it comes to student learning. Numerous studies have shown that the effects of good teaching on student achievement are substantial and lasting. As schools and districts transition to the Common Core, teachers will be required to adjust both what they teach and how they teach.

Classroom "walk-throughs" and other authentic, real-time feedback tools will help administrators to support teachers as they make these shifts.




General



  • Quality Review Rubric for Lessons and Units  External Link  
    The Tri-State Collaborative (composed of educational leaders from Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island and facilitated by Achieve) has developed criterion-based rubrics and review processes to evaluate the quality of lessons and units intended to address the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and ELA/Literacy.
  • CCSS Evidence Guides: Aligned Practice Made Clear  External Link  
    These tools provide specific guidance for what the CCSS for ELA / literacy and math looks like in planning and practice. They are designed as developmental tools for teachers and those who support teachers.
  • Overview of a Classroom Walk Through PDF External Link 06/04/2012 (73.62 KB)
    This document, adapted from the Charlotte County School District, describes the purpose of a classroom walk through and what observers might look for.
  • Learning Walks
    The purpose of Learning Walks is to improve teacher instruction via the power of collaborative team reflection and feedback tied to structured classroom observation. In this set of two videos, consultant Kevin Feldman talks about what makes a Learning Walk effective, and how you can use it to improve student achievement in your school. The videos were produced with the support of the Oregon DATA Project by a collaboration of ESDs: Wallowa, InterMountain, Grant, Malheur and North Central.

    • The 5x8 Card: A Tool for Observing the CCSS Math Practices  External Link  
      This tool focuses observers’ attention on what students are saying and doing so that their work (their thinking) can be at the center of educators’ discussions. Components of the card are aligned with CCSS-M and promote a framework of equity by asking observers to attend to whether all students in a classroom have appropriate opportunities to development their mathematical understanding.

      This tool can be used for planning literacy instruction, for walk throughs or for reflection on lessons taught. Feedback is broken into three areas: 1) Instructional practices, 2) Environmental support, and 3) Continuum on Bloom’s taxonomy.
    • Samples of Student Writing    
      These student writing samples have been annotated to illustrate the criteria required to meet the Common Core State Standards for particular types of writing—argument, informative/explanatory text, and narrative—in a given grade.

      The Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) project is a research partnership of academics, teachers, and education organizations committed to investigating better ways to identify and develop effective teaching. Funding is provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
