Learning is cumulative, and what kindergarteners are taught about learning to read and working with numbers is directly connected to what high school seniors learn about the global economy, literature, mathematics, science, and history. It is critical that kindergarten teachers understand what high school teachers do to prepare students for the future. And high school teachers need to know why kindergarten teachers stress knowledge of the sounds of the alphabet and number sense and how instructional goals in kindergarten are connected to proficiencies in reading comprehension and mathematics.
The best way to make sure all students get an excellent education is to ensure that instruction is seamless, focused, and purposeful throughout K-12.
Frameworks
that describe how to implement comprehensive literacy and mathematics programs are effective tools in this effort.
Literacy Framework
Steps
1. Become familiar with Oregon's Literacy Framework.
Oregon K-12 Literacy Framework - Reading
The purpose of the Reading Framework is to ensure that all Oregon students read at grade level or above as soon as possible after entering school and that they progress at grade-level or above in content-area reading throughout their school career.
Oregon K-12 Literacy Framework - Writing
The Writing Framework provides a roadmap for districts and schools to ensure students are successful writers each year in school and graduate from high school prepared as writers for college and career.
2. Complete the district and school self-assessments from the Oregon K-12 Literacy Framework
.
These self-audit tools can help districts plan for the implementation of comprehensive reading and writing programs aligned to the CCSS.

Mathematics Framework
1. Examine tools for evaluating comprehensive math programs.

2. Read about Response to Intervention (RtI) in Math.
An overview of Math Response to Intervention (RTI) including the three instructional tiers and components that are common to most systems such as universal screening, progress monitoring, systematic instruction, and differentiation based on data.
3. Visit the Center for Teaching and Learning website on RTI for Math.
