CCSS Toolkit: Early Childhood - Mathematics

Awareness & Understanding

Research validates the importance of early experiences in mathematics for lasting positive outcomes. There is growing evidence that early math skills are highly predictive of later academic achievement. These resources can help early educators understand how early experiences in mathematics correlate with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in kindergarten.

Steps

  • 1. Explore the connections between the CCSS and existing resources.
    • Correlation of The Head Start Framework to the Common Core State Standards for Kindergarten  External Link
Oregon is in the process of adopting the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework as the state early learning standards for children ages 3-5. In collaboration between the National Head Start Association and The Source for Learning, this document has been created to illustrate connections between The Head Start Framework and the CCSS for Mathematics.
    • Linking GOLD to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics PDF External Link
Teaching Strategies GOLD is a commonly used early childhood assessment in Oregon. This document aligns the standards for Kindergarten in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics with the objectives, dimensions, and indicators of the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment system.
    • Early Childhood Instructional Support Toolkit
Resources in the ECIS toolkit can be used to address specific child outcomes, drawn from the Common Core State Standards for Kindergarten and the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework, in Math. The resources focus on intentional adult-child interactions related to concept development, quality feedback, and language modeling.
  • 2. Examine prekindergarten standards from other states.
    • New York  External Link
The New York State Prekindergarten Standards provide a framework that focuses on the learning and development of the whole child and are aligned with the existing New York State K-12 learning standards.
    • Massachusetts  External Link
Massachusetts supplemented the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics with pre-kindergarten standards that were collaboratively developed by early childhood educators.
    • Maryland PDF External Link
This draft document provides an overview of the Standards that are grouped together to form the Domains for Prekindergarten. The Standards within each domain are grouped by topic and align to the order of the Common Core Kindergarten Standards for Mathematics.
