Next Generation Science Standards

Science Student

News Announcements

Standards In April 2013, the final Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a new set of voluntary, rigorous, and internationally benchmarked standards for K-12 science education, were released. During the following months, the Oregon State Board of Education evaluated, and then adopt the NGSS. Oregon Department of Education staff, in collaboration with a science content and assessment advisory group, reviewed the final NGSS and provided analysis, including a comparison to Oregon’s then current Science Academic Content Standards, as well as developed a timeline for adoption, transition, implementation, and assessment.

While the State Board adopted the Next Generation Science Standards as the new Oregon 2014 Science Standards, it is important to remember that adoption does not mean instant implementation. It will take a number of years before the NGSS are implemented and assessed in Oregon schools. Through a thoughtful transition and implementation process, the NGSS will be phased in so that districts can implement changes in local curriculum, provide appropriate professional development for teachers, and provide students with opportunities to learn the content, practices, and cross-cutting concepts prior to assessment. Oregon students will continue to be assessed on Oregon’s current Science Academic Content Standards until a new assessment aligned with the 2014 Science Standards is operational in 2018 - 19.

Background information on the development of the NGSS as well as links to resources are available on this web page. The Achieve NGSS website provides links to the NGSS organized by topic and by disciplinary core idea as well as supporting documents and resources in the appendices. The Next Generation Science Standards are based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council (NRC). This framework is a powerful document that provides background information and the latest research to improve science teaching and learning. A PDF version of the NRC Framework is available for free download on the National Academies Press website.
