Transitioning to the Common Core State Standards is more than just replacing one set of standards with another. It is an opportunity for schools and districts to think about what and how they teach and to purposefully plan for student success.
Schools and districts already have many teams that guide their work. While new teams do not need to be created for CCSS implementation, it is necessary to have a team whose job it is to develop the district's plan for implementation and who will be accountable for moving the work forward.
Considering Timelines

Getting Organized
Steps
1. Use the "Roles and Responsibilities" template to consider who might be members of your district's CCSS team.
10/18/2011 (189.50 KB)
This template lists a variety of possible school roles and related task descriptions to support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.
2. Join a CCSS learning community for school leaders.
Combining College Board's deep understanding of CCSS with NASSP's extensive history in principal development and school improvement, the two organizations are launching an online community and webinar series to highlight the issues that K-12 school leaders will need to consider during the CCSS transition.
3. Review the Instructional Leadership Module developed for CCSS.
This module from "Achieve the Core" is designed to guide and support principals, content supervisors, central office leaders, and coaches in the work of planning and carrying out the implementation of the CCSS. The module addresses five aspects of effective leadership in implementation: knowing and understanding the shifts, setting a vision for college and career readiness, developing clear metrics to guide the work, building capacity in schools, and staying engaged.
4. Watch webinars for school and district leaders on implementing the CCSS.
Creating Communities of Support for Implementing the CCSS
This webinar from ASCD provides information on how district, school, and classroom personnel can collaborate and create communities of support toward successful implementation.
The Principal’s Role in Implementing CCSS at the Secondary School Level
This webinar discusses what kinds of preparation principals must undertake to ensure that their students will be prepared to master new college- and career-ready standards and to demonstrate that mastery on the new assessments they will take in 2014-15.
