Oregon Department of Education staff, in collaboration with the Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center, has developed an introductory module to assist K-12 teachers and leaders in building initial understanding of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). Titled
Mathematics Module 1
, this first module includes a series of six sessions to support teams in working together to build understanding of the CCSSM by addressing the following questions:
What are the mathematical practices?
What CCSS content is now in my grade? (e.g., understanding critical areas and clusters)
How does content in my grade fit in the new mathematics progressions? (e.g., understanding domains)
Each of the six sessions includes facilitator notes, a PowerPoint presentation, as well as handouts, and should take approximately one hour to complete. These sessions can be organized several ways: six individual sessions, two half-day workshops comprised of three sessions each (Day 1 would focus on understanding the CCSSM content, Day 2 would focus on understanding the mathematical practices), or one all day workshop.
