Preparation of Test Items

Preparation of Test ItemsODE has coordinated several training events to identify and prepare the pool of items that are available for students who use Braille through the Braille interface of OAKS Online starting in the fall of 2011-12. The training events consisted of the following:

  • Item Classification Event (December 7 and 8, 2010).
ODE convened Oregon educators, including classroom teachers, content experts, teachers for the visually impaired, and Braillists to review Oregon’s OAKS Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences item pools and identify those items suitable for Braille transcription.
  • Item Writing Event (December 20 – 22, 2010).
ODE convened Oregon educators, including classroom teachers and content experts to develop additional items suitable for Braille transcription to ensure a sufficient number of items to assess the full depth and breadth of Oregon’s assessed content standards. Braillists and teachers for the visually impaired advised ODE during this work.
  • Implementation Planning Event (March 1 and 2, 2011).
ODE and its test vendor, American Institutes for Research (AIR) convened ODE’s stakeholders, including classroom teachers, content experts, teachers for the visually impaired, Braillists, and partners from the Oregon Textbook and Media Center, the Oregon Commission for the Blind, and the American Printing House for the Blind, to inform the decision on how best to deliver OAKS Online to students who use Braille.
  • Tagging Training Event (April 12 and 13, 2011).
ODE and its test vendor, American Institutes for Research (AIR) convened Oregon educators, including classroom teachers, content experts, Braillists, and Spanish experts to train them on creating alternate text tags for Oregon’s items to support a computer-based read-aloud accommodation for all students and Braille and audio presentation for students who use Braille.
  • Spanish Tagging Training Event (June 21 and 22, 2011).
ODE convened its Spanish expert reviewers to train them on creating Spanish alternate text tags for Oregon’s items to support a computer-based read-aloud accommodation for students taking the English-Spanish side-by-side version of OAKS Online.
