RE: Child Care Wellness Advisory Board Application Request
I am writing to inform CACFP Center Sponsors of an exciting opportunity. We are seeking
applications from CACFP Center Sponsor staff to participate on a Child Care Wellness Advisory
Committee.
Background
The Oregon Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs (ODE CNP) received a
$500,000 grant from USDA for a three-year project to implement nutrition and physical activity
initiatives through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
ODE CNP will award $250,000 to Oregon CACFP Sponsors of child care homes and centers in
the form of competitive sub-grants. The grants can be used by sponsors to develop and sustain
best practices related to childhood obesity prevention by encouraging good nutrition, increased
physical activity, reduction in screen time, and breastfeeding support and promotion.
During the Annual CACFP Training our staff will provide sponsors with more information on this
USDA CACFP Child Care Wellness Grant opportunity.
Advisory Committee Activities
The ODE CNP Child Care Wellness Grant Advisory Committee includes members from various State agencies and other state-level partners and has a designated position for one CACFP center staff person.
The Child Care Advisory Committee will be involved in the following activities:
- Provide guidance and expertise to the Child Care Wellness Grant project team
throughout the three-year grant.
- Provide advice on the development of the Child Care Wellness Virtual Warehouse and
on the application and selection process for sub-grants.
- Create the Child Care Wellness Champion Nomination/Request for Proposals forms,
and participate in the nomination and funding process.
- Aim to establish professional accreditation for nutrition and physical activity trainings for
Oregon child care workers which can be counted toward licensing requirements.
- Aim to create a formal state-wide Healthy Practices certification or recognition system for
Child Care Wellness Champions, so that participating workers and facilities can be
acknowledged in the community and use this status to promote their business.
