What is changing when?
As you are aware, the Oregon diploma requirements have changed. Students will be required to take higher levels of English, math, and science. Students will also demonstrate their proficiency in a set of essential skills, initially reading, writing, math, and speaking. As a teacher, you have a vital role to play in ensuring that students receive the skills, opportunities, and assistance to meet these more rigorous requirements.

Click here to view the general changes to the diploma requirements. Please keep in mind that these are the state set minimum requirements. Your school district may have additional requirements above and beyond those listed here.

The changes will be phased in over the coming years. Click on the years below to find the graduation requirements for each year:

What are the essential skills?
Beginning in 2012, students must demonstrate proficiency in the Essential Skill of reading to receive a high school diploma. Following will be writing in 2013 and apply mathematics in 2014. The Essential Skills are included in the state content standards and are process skills that students can use to support a variety of academic and work related tasks.

How will students demonstrate proficiency in the Essential Skills?
Students will have multiple options and opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency in the Essential Skills. Students will be able to demonstrate their proficiency through any of the following assessment options:
  • the Oregon Statewide Assessments (OAKS);
  • samples of student work scored by trained teachers;
  • additional national standardized assessments (such as SAT and ACT).

What resources are available to help me understand these changes and transition smoothly to these new requirements?
The Oregon Department of Education Oregon Diploma webpage has a wide range of resources specifically designed for teachers and administrators. For a wide range of resources designed for districts and teachers visit www.ode.state.or.us/go/diploma.

These resources include: New resources will be added to this site as they become available.

How can I help my students and their families prepare for these new requirements?
Teachers at every level will need to work together to ensure that all students have a strong foundation of skills to prepare them for life after high school. If students receive a strong foundation and the supports they need along the way, they will be better prepared to meet the rigors of the Oregon diploma. Early intervention, tutoring, after school programs, and summer school programs can all help students prepare to graduate ready for life, college, and work.

The Oregon Diploma brochure: Moving Education Forward is available in print and electronically on this site. Please feel free to hand it out to students and their families as a general overview of what is changing and how the new diploma requirements will help prepare students for the challenges of the modern workforce.

The brochure is available in print in English and electronically in English PDF.
