Essential Skill Assessment
Apply mathematics in a variety of settings


Mathematics Essential Skill Description

Apply mathematics in a variety of settings, means that students:
  • Interpret a situation and apply workable mathematical concepts and strategies, using appropriate technologies where applicable.
  • Produce evidence, such as graphs, data, or mathematical models, to obtain and verify a solution.
  • Communicate and defend the verified process and solution, using pictures, symbols, models, narrative or other methods.



Mathematics Essential Skill Graduation Requirement

Students first enrolled in Grade 9 in the 2010-2011 school year and beyond are required to demonstrate that they are proficient in the Mathematics Essential Skill in order to graduate. Students fulfill this graduation requirement by earning at, or above, a specific score (the achievement standard) on one of the approved assessment options.
