Middle Level Toolkit - Middle Level Philosophy

Toolkit
The framework of the new Oregon Diploma understands and recognizes the key role that middle level educators play in the successful preparation and transition from middle level to high school. Success for students is dependent upon a schools organization, curriculum pedagogy, and programs that promote and support academic excellence, social equity, and developmental responsiveness.

A successful middle level school understands that uniqueness of the adolescent learner and has at its foundation a balanced approach that is student centered in providing comprehensive services to foster healthy physical, social, emotional and intellectual development. As adolescent learners, middle level students need the requirements and challenges of the high school learner; those of rigor and relevancy. In addition, students must have positive relationships with staff, peers, and the community at large. This sense of belonging is key to developing adolescents, and must be an integral part of the successful school.
