Kids with Kite

Curriculum and Instruction The goal of the comprehensive health education program is the development of health-literate students, ones that have learned the skills necessary to access valid health information and health promoting products and services, analyze the influence of culture, media, technology and other factors on health, use interpersonal communication skills, goal-setting, decision-making and self-management to enhance health and advocate for personal, family and community health.

Coordinated School Health

  • Healthy Kids Learn Better
Healthy Kids Learn Better is a partnership between the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Department of Human Services - Health Services, in collaboration with other health and education organizations. Together we are reducing barriers to learning in many ways, including:
    • Promoting, at the state level, the connections between health and education, and building supportive funding, leadership and policy,
    • Providing technical assistance to local school districts on forming Coordinated School Health Teams, assessing their local needs and developing a coordinated school health approach,
    • Training teachers on research-based health and prevention curricula,
    • Providing assistance on building and selecting comprehensive health, physical education and counseling programs that work.

  • Healthy School Celebrations PDF  03/09/2009 (601.20 KB)
Let's Party! From birthday parties to holiday celebrations, there are many celebrations in elementary schools. Along with the fun, usually comes food. Just one school party can include pizza, sugary juice drinks, chips, cake, and ice cream, plus a goodie bag with candy.
Offering so many treats so often can contribute to unhealthy eating habits. However, with a few easy changes, parents, teachers, and school administrators can shift the focus of school parties from unhealthy food to healthy fun. This is an awesome list of alternatives.

Legislative Requirements and Supporting Documentation

  • Safety of School Sports - Concussions

This legislation requires individuals engaged in athletic coaching in Oregon be annually trained in recognizing the signs and symptoms of a concussion and how to seek proper medical treatment for a person suspected of having a concussion.
  • Steroids and Performance-Enhancing Substances
During the 2008 Session, the content from 2007 SB 517 was updated with technical changes as part of Senate Bill 1066. Information can be found on this page.
  • Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in Schools
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that analyzes cardiac rhythm and prompts a user to deliver a shock when necessary. Its purpose is to jolt abnormal heart rhythm, such as ventricular fibrillation, back to normal sinus rhythm.
