School Health Profiles

The School Health Profile is a biennial survey conducted by the Oregon Department of Education in partnership with the Oregon Department of Human Services, Health Services, Office of Family Health. School Health Profile provides information on current school health policies and practices in Oregon middle/junior and senior high schools. During the spring of even-numbered years, Oregon conducts the School Health Profile among a sample of secondary schools. Surveys are given to the school principal and lead health educator to collect data describing the current status of:
  • School Health education requirements and content
  • Physical education requirements
  • Asthma management activities
  • Food service
  • Competitive foods practices and policies
  • Family and community involvement in school health programs
  • School health policies related to HIV/AIDS prevention, tobacco prevention, violence prevention, and physical activity

This report summarizes 2004 School Health Profile data. For each middle/junior or senior high school that was selected as part of the sample, two surveys were used to collect data one for the principal and one for the lead health educator. The two surveys were mailed to 342 regular secondary public schools containing the grades 6 through 12 in Oregon in the spring of 2004. Usable surveys were received from 249 principals (75%) and from 235 health educators (71%). The principals and health educators who responded are representative of secondary schools in Oregon.
