April 2011 Archived Statewide Secondary Literacy Training
In April 2011, ODE sponsored four different 3 hour Secondary Literacy training sessions presented by
Drew Braun,Ph.D.
,
Ginger Kowalko,M.S.
, and
Lori Rae Smith,D.Ed
. The sessions were recorded and are now available on the ODE website. These are free instructional resources available to everyone. Each session has been separated into chapters of one hour or less duration. The accompanying power point presentations can be printed before or after viewing the sessions.
Essential Skills of Reading
Following an overview of the basic Reading Essential Skills requirements, presenters shared classroom applications for students in grades 4-12 which included: real world reading opportunities linked to instructional topics, locating engaging articles and text, and when/how to use the Essential Skills reading template.

Essential Skills of Writing
Following an overview of the basic Writing Essential Skills requirements, presenters shared methodology on: data collection, development of district norms, and the use of district writing work samples to set criteria for interventions. Presenters showed how one district created a K-8 scope and sequence with an emphasis on how writing can improve reading.

Content Literacy Instruction
The presenters introduced and demonstrated six new techniques from their updated and copyrighted 2011 ACCESS* Toolkit, 3rd edition (Academic Content Competence: Every Student Succeeding). Live participants used content area textbooks during training activities. When viewing the archived session, a content area textbook should be available so recorded activities can be duplicated. Some ACCESS* materials were provided to live participants during the original session but are no longer available from ODE. You can still benefit from the information shared here without having those additional resource but if you decide to obtain ACCESS materials contact Ginger Kowalko: gkowalko@gmail.com

Presenters shared current research and practice in the implementation of middle grade interventions to promote high school graduation. Topics covered reading and engagement interventions, and how data teams can improve both short term and long term student outcomes.
