Oregon Students Shine in State S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G Contest
The Oregon State Spelling Contest has been a part of the Oregon State Fair tradition for 30 years, and it was held again on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. The State Spelling Contest is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education.
The Oregon State Spelling Contest is not a “spelling bee,” but a written spelling test. Students win at the school through district and county levels to make it to the state contest. There are three divisions for the event, and more than 60 students from across the state qualified. Each student spelled 30 words, with a tiebreaker round to decide winners, if needed. Awards were given for first, second, and third places – each receiving a US Savings Bond ($200, $100 and $50)
