| Oregon Department of Education Seeks Feedback on Native American Mascot Issue |
The Oregon State Board of Education is reviewing current policy and practices in public schools regarding the use of race-based mascots displaying Native American names and images. In Oregon, at least fifteen public high schools currently use race-based Native American mascots. The Board is reviewing a growing body of social science literature, civil rights standards, and empirical research that indicates the use of race-based mascots promotes discrimination, pupil harassment, and stereotyping.
