Jerome Colonna Joins Oregon State Board of Education
(Salem, Ore.) – Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Rob Saxton and State Board Chair Samuel Henry are pleased to announce Jerome Colonna has joined the State Board of Education. Colonna was confirmed by the Oregon Senate in May and will fill the vacant 2nd congressional district position. Jerome Colonna’s term runs from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2016. Today was his first meeting with the Board.
“I am so pleased to have Jerry Colonna join the Board,” said Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton. “He brings over four decades of experience as an educator and leader, but just as important, he brings an incredible passion for improving our schools, a commitment to educational equity, and an unwavering belief in the promise and potential of our kids. I appreciate Jerry’s continued commitment and service and look forward to working with him in the months and years to come.”
Jerome Colonna comes to the board after 44 years in education. He served as the superintendent of the Redmond and Beaverton School Districts and had administrative roles in Eugene and Corvallis in addition to teaching positions in Alaska, California, and Oregon. Colonna retired as Superintendent from the Beaverton School District in 2011 after eight years in the role. He currently works as a part-time education consultant. Colonna was named Oregon Superintendent of the Year in 2001.
“I am particularly interested in serving on the State Board of Education to help implement rigorous academic standards that will be aligned from pre-school through grade 12 and to work for a system of stable and adequate funding for Oregon’s public schools for now and into the future,” said Jerome Colonna.
In addition to his years as a superintendent, Jerome Colonna served as the Director of Secondary Education in the Eugene School District, Assistant to the Superintendent in the Corvallis School District, Chair of Guidance and Counseling in the Corvallis School District, and held a number of roles as a guidance counselor and science teacher. Colonna has served on a number of boards and commissions including: the Executive Committee of the American Association of School Administrators National Governing Board; Chair of Education Northwest’s Board of Directors; Chair of Teacher Standards and Practices Commission; President of the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators; Nike School Innovation Advisory Board; and the Chalkboard Project Advisory Council. In addition to his roles in K-12 leadership, Colonna has also served as an adjunct instructor at Portland State University, Lewis and Clark College, and the University of Oregon. He received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Master of Education degrees from Oregon State University. He completed further education in school administration at both Portland State and the University of Oregon.
“Jerry will be an incredible asset to the Board,” said State Board Chair Samuel Henry. “We have important work ahead of us and his deep experience in Oregon schools will provide an invaluable perspective as we work to improve learning opportunities and outcomes for all of our students.”
The seven-member board sets educational policies and standards for Oregon's 197 public school districts and 19 educational service districts.
