Kindergarten Assessment 2014-2015

The 2014-2015 Kindergarten Assessment will be similar to last year's with three assessed segments:
  1. Early Literacy measuring all students in English Letter Names and Early Letter Sounds. This year identified Spanish-speaking English language learners must also take Spanish Letter Names; no waiver is available for 2014-2015.
  2. Early Math with sixteen multiple choice questions. Identified Spanish-speaking English language learners choose whether to take it as English or Spanish/English.
  3. Approaches to Learning with fifteen items based on the teacher's observation of the student during regular classroom routines and activities. This segment is completed by the student's teacher using the Child Behavior Rating Scale.

Again in 2014-2015 the Kindergarten Assessment will be paper-pencil only through four booklets:
  • A1: Assessor Booklet for Approaches to Learning;
  • A2: Assessor Booklet (with sections for English, and for Spanish/English) for Early Literacy and Early Math;
  • S1: Student Booklet in English; and
  • S2: Student Booklet in Spanish/English.

New for 2014-2015, districts will order materials through OAKS TIDE based on anticipated Kindergarten enrollment. Note: district orders will identify the number of kindergarten students and those kinder students anticipated to be identified as Spanish-speaking English language learners anticipated in fall 2014. Test Booklets will not be pre-coded by individual student SSID. The 2014-2015 Kindergarten Assessment Order window will be open June 3 to July 11, 2014. When placing their order, districts will also specify one of two delivery windows: either August 4-8, 2014 (to arrive prior to the start of the statewide test window) or August 25-29, 2014 (to arrive prior to September 1, 2014). Your Regional ESD Partner is available to assist you with the order process.

The final Kindergarten Assessment administration rules including universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations will be published in April, 2014 in the Preliminary 2014-2015 Test Administration Manual. Important kindergarten assessment dates are in the Important Dates on page 2 of this week's Assessment and Accountability Update.

In summary:
  • Register with your Regional ESD Partner to attend the May 21 or August 20 Kindergarten Assessment WebEx Training by Thursday, May 15, 2014.
  • DTCs must preview the required training modules prior to the Kindergarten Assessment WebEx training. The training modules will be posted by Friday, May 16, 2014.
