Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton Statement on TELL Survey Launch
“Starting today, teachers and principals around our state will have the opportunity to share vital information about the teaching and learning conditions in their schools through the Teaching, Empowering, Leading, and Learning (TELL) Survey. We want to ensure that all of our educators have the supportive environment necessary to help students achieve at the highest levels. As we work to reform and improve our education system to better support students and improve student outcomes, we need to hear from our teachers and principals about what they need to do their jobs well and make these reforms a success.
“The results of this survey will help guide both local school improvement efforts and state policy discussions, but the results will be richest and most valuable if a large percent of our educators participate. We need to hear directly from those who work most closely with our students as we all work together to improve the system, and I hope that all of our teachers and principals will take the time to participate in this exciting opportunity.
“We know that other states that have conducted similar surveys have found the information incredibly helpful, and I am excited to have the opportunity to administer this survey here in Oregon. The quality of teaching conditions can encourage or constrain good teaching and have a powerful influence on student achievement. Understanding and improving teaching conditions can lead to increased student success, improved teacher efficacy and motivation, and enhanced teacher recruitment and retention. I look forward to hearing directly from our educators and having their voices help inform our efforts to improve education in our state.”
The TELL Survey will be administered from February 24 through March 24, 2014 to licensed teachers and principals in Oregon’s 197 school districts. TELL Oregon is conducted under the leadership of the Oregon Department of Education and supported by a coalition of education organizations including the Oregon Education Association, the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators, the Oregon School Boards Association, and the Chalkboard Project.
