As part of ODE's process for continuous improvement of the ELPA, new items and item types are being field tested during the 2013-14 test window. The field test items are mixed with operational items during both the core and speaking segments of the ELPA. This assignment of field test items to students is a randomized process, and students will see various item types. For 2013-14, most students will see an average of three field test items during the core segment (listening, reading, and writing) of the ELPA, and usually one field test item during the speaking segment. To ensure that students are prepared and familiar with all the item types they might encounter on the ELPA, whether operational or field test items, best practices include providing all students with a practice session of the ELPA prior to the operational assessment so that they can experience the various item types and listen to the tutorial on the items.
