|Targeting Up and Banking Scores|
Students need to be assessed each year in grades 3 through 8 to meet participation requirements; however, they may take any OAKS test they like that is at or above grade level, and the best score will be counted, regardless of the grade associated with the test. For example, if a 5th grade student meets on a 6th grade test but exceeds for the 5th grade test, the 5th grade test will be used for accountability purposes. The one exception is 8th grade, since all 8th grade students must take the 8th grade test, even those who take and pass the high school assessment.
All grade 11 students must be tested, unless they have already taken and passed the high school assessment in a lower grade (i.e., the score was “banked”). However, the applicability of banked scores will change when Smarter Balanced becomes operational in 2014-15. In 2014-15, all students will be required to take the Smarter Balanced assessment, even those who have a banked OAKS score. The banked OAKS score may be used to meet Essential Skills, but it cannot be used for accountability purposes starting with 2014-15.
Please refer to the 2013-14 Test Administration Manual (pp. 35-36) and Executive Numbered Memo 007-2012-13 for more information.
