Administering Spanish/English Kindergarten Early Math

Guidance for Administering the English-only Early Math Assessment:

Refer to the Assessor copy for the verbatim directions that should be read to the students. The bolded text is what is allowed to be read. Assessors must not describe any graphics or otherwise assist the students.

Example: Sample Item #2 (from the Assessor Booklet, A2, page 3)

Only the bolded text in the assessor booklet can be read aloud to the student. An assessor may not read the numbers, spaces or images provided in the graphic (“one, blank, three”) in addition to the bolded text.

Guidance for Administering the Spanish/English (Bilingual) Early Math Assessment:

ELL-Spanish speaking students who will be assessed using the bilingual version of the early math items have the option of hearing both the English and the Spanish. At the start of the early math assessment, the student should be asked whether they want Spanish only or both Spanish and English. A bilingual assessor who is trained and endorsed by the district in Spanish should administer the Spanish bilingual version of this assessment, otherwise validity could be compromised.

For the bilingual version of the assessment, refer to the Assessor Booklet (A2, pages 13 - 16) for the verbatim directions that should be read to the students. The bolded text (in both English and Spanish) is what is allowed to be read. Assessors must not describe any graphics or otherwise assist the students.

Example: Sample Item #2 (from the Assessor Booklet, A2, page 13)

Only the bolded text in the Assessor Booklet (A2) can be read aloud to the student. An assessor may not read the numbers or spaces provided in the graphic (“uno, espacio, tres”) in addition to the bolded text.
