“As a university educator, State Board member, and former long-term member of the Oregon Commission on Children and Families, I’ve had a wonderful opportunity to serve and learn about the vibrant and diverse communities of Oregon,” said Dr. Samuel Henry. “This is the place where Ana Maria and I chose 21 years ago to make our home and raise our daughter. I am honored by this expression of teamwork and renewing our commitment to leadership that serves the public education policy needs of our state.”
Serilda Summers-McGee is the manager of Diverse Talent Planning at Kaiser Permanente Northwest, where she is responsible for the Affirmative Action, Diversity Recruitment, and Internship programs. Previously, she served as the Executive Director of Partners in Diversity and in a number of positions at Reed College including Assistant Dean of Residence Life. Serilda serves on the Albertina Kerr Governing Board, Stand for Children Oregon Advisory Board, and the National Association of State Boards of Education Board of Directors.
“I’m excited to work with Chair Henry on the State Board of Education,” said Summers-McGee. “Oregon is on the precipice of significant education reform and I’m honored to play a small part in the movement.”
The seven-member board sets educational policies and standards for Oregon's public school districts, community college districts, and educational service districts. State Board members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. Five members represent Oregon’s five congressional districts and two members represent the state at large. Members serve a four-year term and are limited to two consecutive terms. The Board elects a chairperson to serve a one year term beginning on July 1.
