Please mark your calendar for the 3rd annual Innovative Schools Conference, October 11, 2013 in Gervais:
The Northwest Innovative Schools Network (NWISN) Conference was developed to address isolation expressed by alternative school educators and provides professional development and networking on Oregon statewide inservice day.
The one-day conference is held annually at Gervais High School in Gervais, Oregon where approximately 150 staff from innovative schools gather and attend workshops focused on professional learning designed to support alternative school educators and administrators.
The 2013 NWISN Conference “Developing Skills for Life” will offer a similar format to previous years with a low cost that includes lunch and breakout sessions on the Common Core Standards, GED Option Programs, implications of brain research for specialized programs, career-related learning, credit by proficiency, social media and online/blended learning, program development and evaluation, accreditation and school funding. This conference will feature opening remarks by Oregon State Deputy Superintendent, Rob Saxton. Student panel sessions will provide participants an opportunity to consider students' academic points of view. Finally, a dynamic a dynamic lunchtime speaker, Christian Moore, is sure to keep everyone upbeat and entertained.
Christian Moore is an internationally renowned speaker, licensed clinical social worker, and the founder of the WhyTry Program. Growing up, Christian struggled as an inner-city kid with severe learning disabilities. After receiving his Master’s in social work, he created these resources for kids who battle the same problems he did. Christian speaks at over 100 education events a year, combining entertainment value with his unique resiliency formula. Christian’s personal mission is to ensure that youth are given an opportunity to succeed, regardless of social or economic status, race, background, or other personal obstacles.
