Acting Deputy Announces Chief of Staff Hire
Sarah Pope to join Oregon Department of Education
(Salem, Ore.) – Acting Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton today announced the hire of Sarah Pope as his Chief of Staff. Sarah comes to ODE from the Oregon Business Association where she served as Legislative Director. Prior to OBA, Sarah spent over seven years with the education advocacy group Stand for Children serving in a number of roles including the organization’s Deputy Director and then Oregon Acting Executive Director. She will begin her new duties September 24.
“Our state is undertaking significant changes to the structure of our education system,” said Acting Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton. “All of us – schools, districts, communities, and state government – will need to do our work differently if we are to get the outcomes we want for our kids. I need a strong Chief of Staff to help coordinate this critical work and I feel very fortunate to be able to bring someone of Sarah’s experience and talents on board. I know she will be a great addition to our team.”
As Chief of Staff, Sarah will help coordinate key Oregon Department of Education initiatives, oversee reorganization efforts at the Department, and work with agency staff and partners on moving forward current education redesign work. She will be based out of the Office of the Deputy Superintendent.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the Department of Education at this unique moment in Oregon's history," said Sarah Pope. "We have an opportunity to redesign a new seamless educational system to better support Oregon's students, teachers, principals, and superintendents. I can't wait to join the team and get to work."
Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Urban and Environmental Policy from Occidental College.
