|Acting Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton announces new assistant superintendent|
(Salem, Ore.) – Acting Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton today named Heidi Sipe as Assistant Superintendent for the Office of Educational Improvement and Innovation (EII). Heidi most recently served as the Superintendent of the Umatilla School District. She will begin her new duties September 17.
“Heidi’s strong background in district administration, federal programs, curriculum and instruction, and professional development, paired with her passion, dedication, and commitment to equity and excellence make her a natural fit to help advance our current work,” said Acting Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton. “I am excited to welcome her to our team and know that she will be a huge asset in moving forward our current education initiatives.”
As Assistant Superintendent for the Office of EII, Heidi will be responsible for overseeing a wide range of programs and services including federal Title programs, school improvement efforts, alternative and charter schools, academic standards and instructional materials, PK-20 redesign efforts, Oregon Diploma and Common Core implementation, and much more.
“I have long enjoyed working with educators from around the state on the issues facing our students and schools,” said Heidi Sipe. “Now, more than ever, it is important that we pool our talents and work together to support educational success for all students. This is an exciting time in Oregon education. We are embracing rigorous standards through the Common Core, working to align services and experiences through a streamlined PK-20 system, and developing new ways to measure and support our schools. I’m very excited, and honored, to join with others at the Department of Education in this critical work.”
Heidi has served as the Superintendent of the Umatilla School District since 2007. Prior to that she served as Umatilla School District’s Director of Title Programs/Assistant Superintendent. She began her career as a social studies teacher at Clara Brownell Middle School. Heidi has been actively involved in state-level education issues for a number of years and has served on boards and commissions including: COSA Funding Coalition Steering Committee, Northwest Women in Educational Administration Board Member, Educational Enterprise Steering Committee member, Teacher Standards and Practices Commissioner, and Chair of the Next Generation Accountability Reward, Focus, and Priority Schools Workgroup.
A native of eastern Washington, Heidi moved to Oregon in 2000. She currently lives in Umatilla with her husband, a middle school math teacher, and her two children. She holds a bachelor’s in education from Eastern Washington University and a masters in teaching from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. She earned her administrator’s credentials from Lewis and Clark College.
