Superintendent Castillo Statement on Chief Education Officer Announcement
(Salem, Ore) – This morning, Governor Kitzhaber announced his selection of Rudy Crew to be Oregon’s first chief education officer. Crew has served as chancellor of the New York City Public Schools, the superintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and superintendent of districts in Massachusetts, California, and Washington state. He currently serves as an education professor at the University of Southern California. The Oregon Education Investment Board is scheduled to vote on his hiring Thursday.
“I am deeply committed to the Governor’s vision for educational excellence in our state, and Dr. Crew’s extensive national experience, his proven commitment to student success, and his focus on innovation and reform will be an incredible asset as we work to transform our system, better align services and supports, and prepare all of our kids for college and career,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo. “Dr. Crew comes to us with experience in both K-12 and higher education which will be critical as we work to break down silos and create seamless pathways from preschool to college or workforce training. It will take all of us, at all levels of the system, working together to create the education system that our students need and deserve, and Dr. Crew will play an important part in ensuring this critical work continues to move forward.”
