Transition to Common Core State Standards and Smarter Balanced Common Assessment

Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, Oregon will administer the Smarter Balanced Common Assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics based on the Common Core State Standards. Oregon is part of the collaborative consortium of states developing Smarter Balanced. As an aid in visualizing the magnitude of the shift in mathematics content from the 2007/2009 Oregon Mathematics Content Standards to the Common Core State Standards, and the increased rigor of the Smarter Balanced Common Assessment, ODE has prepared a document titled “Transition from OAKS to Smarter Balanced Assessment PDF.” This document includes tables showing the grade-level shift comparing where content is currently assessed under the Oregon Content Standards compared to where it will be assessed under the Common Core State Standards, tables showing all Common Core State Standards which are essentially new to Oregon and do not align with any current Oregon standards, and an overview of the Common Core State Standards and the Smarter Balanced Common Assessment.

ODE is developing training modules using the Transition from OAKS to Smarter Balanced Assessment and the Oregon Mathematics Crosswalk, which identifies matches between individual Common Core standards with Oregon standards in mathematics and includes rater comments that highlight the similarities and differences between the standards.
