Oregon Department of Education Seeks Feedback on Native American Mascot Issue

The Oregon State Board of Education is reviewing current policy and practices in public schools regarding the use of race-based mascots displaying Native American names and images. In Oregon, at least fifteen public high schools currently use race-based Native American mascots. The Board is reviewing a growing body of social science literature, civil rights standards, and empirical research that indicates the use of race-based mascots PDF promotes discrimination, pupil harassment, and stereotyping.

The Oregon Department of Education has launched a website to provide information on this topic and gather feedback from around the state.
