State Board of Education Announces New Member
(Salem, Ore.) – State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo and State Board Chair Brenda Frank are pleased to announce Serilda Summers-McGee as the latest member of the State Board of Education. Summers-McGee was confirmed by the Oregon Senate last month and will fill the term vacated by Nikki Squire.
“Serilda brings a wealth of knowledge of both higher education and business, a passion for addressing the academic achievement gap, and a firm belief in the power of education to lift students out of poverty,” said Superintendent Castillo. “I know that the breadth and depth of her experience will be a valuable addition to the State Board of Education.”
Serilda Summers-McGee currently serves as the Executive Director of Partners in Diversity, an organization dedicated to helping Portland area businesses recruit and retain professionals of color. Partners in Diversity operates under the Charitable Trust of the Portland Business Alliance.
“My interest in serving on the Board of Education is simple: I want to help make the students that utilize Oregon public schools more competitive nationally and globally,” said Summers-McGee. “I have worked for many institutions of higher education and my one consistent observation was that a rigorous K-12 background makes all the difference in success. I want to make sure that opportunity for success is available to all of our students.”
Prior to the Portland Business Alliance, Summers-McGee worked in higher education, most recently as the Assistant Dean of Residence Life at Reed College. Previous roles include Co-Interim Director of Orientation, Resident Director, and Multicultural Center Program Coordinator at Reed College. She holds degrees from Muskegon Community College, Grand Valley State University, Ball State University, and Willamette University. Summers-McGee serves on the Albertina Kerr Governing Board and is a member of the Oregon Bar Association Affirmative Actions Committee.
“This is a critical time for education in our state,” said State Board Chair Brenda Frank. “I look forward to working with Mrs. Summers-McGee on the policy issues central to creating a strong, 21st century education system that will prepare our students for college and careers.”
The seven-member board sets educational policies and standards for Oregon's 197 public school districts, 17 community college districts, and 20 educational service districts. The State Board is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. Five members represent Oregon’s five congressional districts and two members represent the state at large. Members serve a four-year term and are limited to two consecutive terms. Current Board members include Brenda Frank (Chair), Samuel Henry, Artemio Paz, Jr., Leslie Shepherd, and Duncan Wyse. Serilda Summers-McGee’s term runs from December 1, 2011 to June 30, 2015.
