Tigard High Teacher Receives Milken Educator Award

Social Studies Teacher Frank Caro Surprised with National Award and $25,000

(Salem, Ore.) –State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo today announced that Tigard High School social studies teacher Frank Caro has been selected as a recipient of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. The surprise announcement was made at an all school assembly this morning, and Superintendent Castillo was joined in presenting the award by Milken Family Foundation Board Member Dr. Thomas Boysen. As part of this recognition, Caro will receive a $25,000 cash award from the Foundation.

“Great teachers change lives, inspire excellence, and shape the future,” said State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo. “They come to work each day excited to share their love of learning with their students, knowing that they can, and they must, make a difference. These teachers believe in the potential of each and every one of their kids, and they work tirelessly to help our students reach that potential. But far too often, these dedicated educators do not receive the appreciation or recognition that they deserve. The Milken Family Foundation is committed to changing that, shining the light on the profession and saying a very big thank you to outstanding young educators like Frank Caro for all that they, and their colleagues, do every day.”

Frank Caro is recognized around his district as a passionate and creative educator with a special ability to connect to all kids, whether they are in his International Baccalaureate Psychology class or in a summer credit recovery program. Caro’s ability to make his lessons accessible and interesting to a wide range of kids has endeared him to his students and earned him the respect of his colleagues. He is highly involved in the life of the school helping with everything from curriculum development to advising multiple student clubs. Caro’s high energy, enthusiasm, and ability to understand students’ diverse needs make him truly stand out, and in recognition of all he has contributed to the school, he was selected as the school district’s teacher of the year in 2010.

“Our public education system is at the heart of America’s promise and is essential in safeguarding the American dream for future generations,” said Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation. “With research confirming that an effective teacher is the single most important school-related factor in raising student achievement, it is clear to see the critical role that outstanding teachers play in shaping our country. We created the Milken Educator Awards to proclaim in a very public way that greatness in education must be recognized and rewarded. As the program’s motto extols, the future belongs to the educated.”

Recipients of the award are recommended to the Foundation by an independent blue ribbon panel appointed by each participating state’s department of education. Selection criteria include exceptional educational talent as evidenced by effective instructional practices and student learning results in the classroom and school; exemplary educational accomplishments beyond the classroom that provide models of excellence for the profession; and an engaging and inspiring presence that motivates and impacts students, colleagues, and the community.

The Milken Educator Awards were established in 1987 by Lowell Milken to reward, retain, and attract the highest caliber teachers in the profession. Today, the Milken Educator Awards is the nation’s largest teacher recognition program.
