Superintendent of Public Instruction announces Christine Miles as Communications Director
SALEM — Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo today named Christine Miles as Communications Director for the Oregon Department of Education. Miles most recently served as press secretary for Governor Kitzhaber. She begins her new duties September 1, 2011.
“Christine played a vital role in the Governor’s office engaging the public on the importance of education reform and I am pleased to have someone with her experience join our team,” said Superintendent Castillo.
“Education is one of my top priorities and having Christine concentrate on our statewide education goals is an advantage for us as we work to deliver better results for students and more resources for teachers,” said Governor Kitzhaber.
As Communications Director, Miles will be responsible for providing information to the public, legislators, educators, associations, state and federal agencies and media regarding the Oregon Department of Education. She will also act as liaison with outside organizations and partners involved in strategic school improvement plans. “I am excited about this new opportunity and it’s my priority to ensure the public, educators and others are fully informed of the agency’s progress and good work,” said Miles.
As a seasoned spokeswoman with experience at a city bureau and a statewide agency, she also works with local and national media, and is experienced with crisis communications. Miles is actively involved in the community including serving on the board of Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division, and as a volunteer for the Hispanic Chamber, and the Brian Grant Foundation.
An Emmy award-winning journalist with 15 years experience in broadcast news covering local, national, and international stories, Miles holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Houston.
