For immediate releasecontact Susanne Smith, 503-947-5637 September 23, 2010 Susan Castillo Statement on Legislative action to maintain services for Oregon’s youngest learners SALEM – “Today the Legislative Emergency Board ensured that our youngest citizens will continue to receive critical educational and developmental services by securing $2.6M in funding for Oregon Pre-kindergarten and Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education. I am grateful that our leaders recognize the vital importance of early education for all of Oregon’s children. “The Legislature indicated they will appropriate $1.3M to Oregon Pre-kindergarten. This means that 531 children living in poverty will be able to remain in their classrooms and continue with the early education we know is so vital for their future academic success. “The Legislature indicated they will appropriate $1.3M to Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education. This means our state can continue to deliver vital services like physical therapy, early literacy, and social development services to help our special education preschoolers get ready for school.”
