For immediate releasecontact Susanne Smith, (503) 947-5637 May 4, 2010 Statement from Susan Castillo on Round II Race to the Top Grant “Today Governor Kulongski announced that Oregon will not apply for the second round of Race to the Top funding. I am very disappointed that Oregon will not consider this opportunity. However, it is clear that there is no consensus of support from Oregon’s education stakeholders and partners to move forward on Race to the Top. “I remain committed to the education reform initiatives our state is currently implementing and I will continue to move forward on many of the major elements of our Race to the Top application. “Despite the Governor’s decision not to move forward with Race to the Top, the focus on educational reform and innovation must continue. I remain committed to implementing the higher standards we have set for students through Oregon’s increased graduation requirements. It is imperative we continue to move forward in preparing our students for college or a career. “I will continue to enhance and develop systems that help support teachers and give them the best tools possible for improving instruction and raising student achievement. I will continue to work with our state and national partners on the Common Core State Standards Initiative to ensure these common standards are right for Oregon, and my agency will continue to provide leadership around the development of a common assessment system.”
