For immediate releasecontact Susanne Smith, (503) 947-5637 May 8, 2009 Oregon Military Family Appreciation Day Statement Statement by State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo regarding Oregon Military Family Appreciation Day Today is Military Family Appreciation Day, and I want to take the opportunity to thank the parents of our school children who are serving in our country’s armed forces. As we face the largest troop deployment in Oregon since World War II, I want to especially recognize those families sacrificing so much when one, and sometimes both, parents are deployed. I know it is tough on kids to see their moms and dads leave home to defend our nation. I also know that there are many, many wonderful educators and staff at schools across our state stepping up, too, to support those students and their families. I am heartened to see the Legislature taking steps to protect families when our men and women in uniform are deployed. We all need to do our part to support these remarkable families. I also ask that members of our Oregon education community consider participating in one of the many events being held around our state to commemorate Military Family Appreciation Day. This occasion is much more than a symbolic gesture. This day is an opportunity to bring our communities closer together to honor our military families for their patriotism and their sacrifice.
