State Board Considers Essential Skill Assessments
After discussion and input from a variety of groups, the State Board is developing a position on the assessment of the Essential Skills as part of the diploma requirements for the Class of 2012 (this year’s 8th graders).

The Board currently leans toward establishing the existing OAKS assessments for mathematics, reading and writing as one method by which students can demonstrate mastery of an Essential Skill and using the current “cut score” as the required achievement level. Also under consideration is using the current state speaking scoring guide, and requiring mathematics work samples.

Additional information will be available on the ODE website soon.
