Use of Aprenda for AYP and Report Card Suspended

To receive full approval of its assessment system from the U.S. Department of Education, the use of Aprenda for AYP and Report Card is suspended until Oregon is able to provide evidence that the assessment is comparable to its English reading assessment.

Please note that all students in 3rd grade must therefore take the OAKS English reading assessment (except for LEP students who take the ELPA and are enrolled for the first time in the United States). Students who otherwise only take the Aprenda will be counted as non-participants for AYP and Report Card.

In 2007-08, 909 students in 3rd grade took the Aprenda. Of the 718 students who took both the OAKS and the Aprenda, 182 met on the Aprenda but did not meet on the OAKS. An additional 81 students who did not take the OAKS passed the Aprenda for a total of 263 students statewide in 27 districts.

ODE is considering whether or not to submit additional evidence to the USED regarding the use of Aprenda in AYP by February 1, 2009. As part of its evaluation, ODE will consult with the assessment advisory committee and will update districts as to the progress of the analysis.

Oregon is committed to continue looking for options for our English Language Learner population. If you have questions or comments, please contact me at doug.kosty@state.or.us eMail.
