The Nyssa School District exemplifies educational excellence, proving what a small school district in an economically disadvantaged, rural community can accomplish.
Some 80% of Nyssa's schoolchildren come from low-income families, but in the words of Superintendent Donald Grotting, "You must have high expectations for every student."
To that end, every school in the district continually strives for high achievement, examining test scores and pushing for stronger results year after year. Nyssa Elementary has enjoyed stunning success in reading and math, and is now pushing a writing program. Nyssa Middle and Nyssa High sharpened their focus on academics, revamped their reading programs, and implemented new promotion standards. As a result, test scores are way up across the board and the high school's dropout rate is a fraction of what it was just a few years ago.
