Letter Re: Pesticide Use in School Buildings

October 16, 2001

TO: Oregon School District Superintendents, Directors of Maintenance Operations, and School Health Programs

The Pesticide Analytical and Response Center (PARC) Board is contacting public school districts to remind you of concerns for pesticide use in school buildings and on school grounds. PARC is a multi-agency state organization that coordinates investigations into reports of adverse health effects from exposure to pesticides.

Every year PARC agencies investigate pesticide-related illness complaints involving students and faculty. Pesticide exposure incidents can be costly and time consuming. Districts have moved classes, even temporarily evacuated and closed facilities due to pesticide-related complaints. These incidents can result in extensive public relations activities for district administrators and school staff to address exposure concerns.

The enclosed Guidelines for School Pesticide Applications will help guide your organization to develop and implement a responsible pesticide management program. Use of these guidelines will help minimize the potential for pesticide exposures and illness complaints. Please share the guidelines with grounds and maintenance personnel who apply or contract for pesticide treatments. We also enclosed a Pesticide Resources poster and a PARC brochure listing whom to contact in case of a pesticide exposure, and to answer questions about pesticides.

We encourage you to contact the Environmental Protection Agency for a free copy of their Pest Control in the School Environment: Adopting Integrated Pest Management” by calling (703) 305-5017. Ask for publication EPA 735-F-93-012. If you have any questions about the guidelines or the use of pesticides on school property, please call our program at (503) 731-4025.

Sincerely,
