Two Outstanding Oregon High School Students Will be Selected to Spend a Week in Washington Observing the Federal Government in Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced that the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) has begun its statewide selection process. The two Oregon students will join 102 other delegates March 8—15, 2014 for the program’s 52nd annual Washington Week.

The USSYP was created by Senate Resolution 324 in 1962 as stated in supporting Senate testimony from that year, “to increase young Americans’ understanding of the interrelationship of the three branches of government, the caliber and responsibilities of federally elected and appointed officials, and the vital importance of democratic decision making not only for America but for people around the world.”

Since that time, more than 5,000 students have participated in this unique leadership program. There is currently one permanent, full-time position available with the Office of Student Learning and Partnerships at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) in Salem, Oregon. This position is Director of the Oregon School for the Deaf.

The Oregon School for the Deaf is a community that fosters lifelong learning, encouraging individuals to become self-fulfilled, productive citizens. OSD currently has approximately 100 deaf and hard of hearing students, many of whom live on campus during the week, and shares a campus with two charter schools in Salem, Oregon. There is currently one permanent, full-time position available with the Office of Assessment and Information Services (OAIS) at the Oregon Department of Education in Salem, Oregon.

The Office of Assessment and Information Services has two primary functions: student assessment; and the collection, validation, and reporting of data for education research, policy-making, and operations. The technical expertise of staff in this unit is available to districts to support business and financial functions. The work of OAIS affects every school, program, school district, and education service district (ESD) in the state.
