Encourage High School Seniors to Apply for the National Youth Science Camp!

Two high school seniors from each state will receive a full scholarship to exchange ideas with scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds. The nearly month-long experience includes lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the nation; overnight camping trips into the Monogahela National Forest; and a visit to Washington D.C.

The NYSC experience is offered at no cost to its participants, so that selected delegates may attend regardless of their financial status. Educational and recreational programming, as well as meals, lodging, and round-trip air passage on scheduled airlines are provided free of charge.

Delegates arrive in Charleston, West Virginia, on Thursday, June 26, and depart on Sunday, July 20, 2013. The NYSC is held near Bartow in the eastern mountains of West Virginia, within the Monongahela National Forest. Application forms are available on the NYSC website at www.nys ...MORE

Nominate an Outstanding Science Teacher for the Presidential Award!

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. The 2012-2013 nomination period for 7-12 grade mathematics and science teachers for the PAEMST program is currently open. Anyone--principals, teachers, parents, students, or members of the general public--may nominate exceptional math or science teachers teaching grades 7-12 for the 2012-13 Award Year. Teachers may also apply directly at www.paemst.org. The Nomination Deadline is April 1, 2013. The Application Deadline is May 1, 2013 for secondary school teachers (Grades 7-12). Mentor Academy Professional Development Opportunities

The Oregon Department of Education in collaboration with The New Teacher Center is offering the Mentor Academy Year One Sessions: Foundation in Mentoring and Formative Assessment, Coaching and Observation & Setting Professional Goals, and Analysis of Student Work.

This training is a requirement for district personnel participating in the Oregon Mentoring Project; however, all districts are encouraged to send personnel who mentor/coach beginning educators.

All Sessions will be held in two locations: Seaside and Salem. Please see the flyer for registration and location details. For additional information please feel free to contact ODE staff.
