Update on Food and Nutrition Services Operations: Child Nutrition Programs

The Child Nutrition (CN) Programs, including School Lunch, School Breakfast, Child and Adult Care Feeding, Summer Food Service and Special Milk will continue operations into October. Meal providers are paid on a reimbursement basis 30 days after the end of the service month. Limited carryover funding will be available during a lapse to support FY 2014 meal service. Once an appropriation is enacted, we expect additional resources will be available to reimburse October performance.

Free and Reduced Price Meal Income Guidelines for School Year 2013-2014

The Oregon Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs announces annually the income guidelines for free and reduced price meals for students in schools operating the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs and for free milk in schools operating the Special Milk Program.

Free and reduced price meals are available for eligible students. Schools that do not offer the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs may offer free milk to eligible students. Eligibility is determined by household size and income. Foster children are eligible for free meal benefits. Qualifying students receive meals or milk without charge or may pay a reduced price of no more than 40 cents for lunch. The Oregon legislature provided funding to eliminate the reduced price payment for School Breakfast. For school year 2013-2014, breakfast will be accessible at no charge to students who qualify for reduced price meals.

Meal Support for Child and Adult Care Food Program Sponsors That Charge for Meals

Free or reduced price meals are available to children meeting the approved eligibility criteria.

The 2013-14 income eligibility guidelines are available here . Children who are Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) households, or are Head Start participants are automatically eligible to receive free meals.

2013 Summer Sunshine Awards

The USDA Summer Sunshine Awards acknowledge the outstanding achievements and hard work involved throughout the Western Region states in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Seamless Summer Option (SSO). For summer 2013, the awards:

Encourage and acknowledge innovation, recognize sponsors who serve hard to reach communities
Provide recognition to sponsors who have increased the number of summer meals served at its sites
Provide recognition to sponsors who work closely with organizations to strengthen the summer meals programs in local communities
